2815 posts ยท Joined 2009. #9 ยท Apr 25, 2016. SFed, If your EGR was that fouled up, I would expect your intake manifold is also caked up with Carbon. This is a very well known problem with our diesels and while many here have never had the issue, like me, others seem to get hit hard and early.
At this point you are ready to fill with coolant. Go ahead and mix a 50-50 batch of coolant and distiller water. Turn the ignition on and set the temps to 90f (highest) on the lowest fan setting. Then back out the bleed screw on the upper hose just a bit, maybe 3 turns. Start pouring coolant into the expansion tank.
Beyond the diesel engine, the rest of the X5 package was not without problems, either. Those can include electronic issues, poor water sealing around the body, noisy suspension and problems with petrol-engined variants as well. Fundamentally, this was not BMWโs finest hour quality-wise.
